Revealing statistics, the JD(S) leader said that, when the JD(S) was in power, it had established 189 first grade colleges, 500 junior colleges, six medical colleges, and six engineering colleges. He demanded that the BJP should publish similar statistics. He also urged teachers and graduates to vote for the JD(S) in the legislative council polls, which are scheduled to be held on Sunday.

B. Janardhan Poojary, Congress leader, called the BJP a “corrupt party” and urged voters to free the state from the corrupt rule of the BJP by voting for the Congress. He also pointed out that Team Anna does not object to the corruption in BJP-governed states such as Karnataka and Gujarat, even when these states do not even have a Lokayukta.

Captain Ganesh Karnik, the BJP candidate for the South-west Graduates Constituency said that the government has solved several issues bothering teachers and has taken several initiatives to make the education sector problem free. He said that the BJP-led state government is also mulling over ways to solve the problem of delay in disbursing salaries to school teachers. Salaries will soon be directly credited to teachers’ accounts, he added.

Captain Ganesh Karnik of BJP, S. P. Dinesh of Congress, and S. L. Boje Gowda of JD (S) are among those contesting for the legislative council elections in the South-west Graduates’ Constituency.

D. H. Shankara Murthy of BJP, Hosur Ramesh Joyappa of Congress, and C. M. Pachaksharaiah of JD (S) are contesting from the South-west Teachers’ Constituency.

Meanwhile, DC Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda has declared a complete ban on sale of liquor for two days from 4:00 p.m. on June 8 to 4:00 p.m. on June 10.

The State Election Commission has warned candidates against pasting posters or notices on public walls. C. S. Suranjana, chief electoral officer, said that the public had complained of posters being pasted in public places in violation of the Karnataka Open Places (Prevention of Disfiguration) Act of 1981. Any candidate found guilty of this violation can get a sentence of as many as 6 months and/or a fine of Rs. 1000.

The state government has issued a circular directing private and government institutions that remain open on Sundays to permit graduates to cast their votes.
