Mangaluru, June 22, 2015 : Several activists of the Communist Party of India  Marxist –CPI(M) took out a procession from Nantur to MLA JR Lobo’s office  as part of its ‘Shaasakara Kacheri Chalo’ programme  on June 22, Monday   to condemn the inordinate delay on the part of the authorities to sanction sites for the homeless in Mangaluru City Corporation limits.

Speaking during the protest, Sunil Kumar Bajal  alleged that no effort has been made to provide housing to the  homeless and added that there were over 1500 homeless people in the MCC limits. He even stated that  MLA Lobo who had promised houses under Ashraya scheme has so far not kept his words.

Lobo’s assurance : MLA JR Lobo who met the protestors  and interacted with them later informed that the MCC  has received over 1200 applications for house sites and assured to commence the process of sanctioning sites at the earliest.

He stated that the Ashraya Committee has met several times  and a blue print has been prepared  to construct Ground+2 floor apartment complexes wherein  every eligible family will be provided an apartment having a hall, bedroom,  kitchen and toilet on a 11 acre government land identified in Kannur area. In the first phase 500 eligible families will be selected for the facility, he said.

Every  house is expected to cost Rs 4 lakhs  of which Rs 1.20 lakhs will be borne by the government while the MCC will offer a grant of Rs 20,000 towards each site. The MLA further stated that the balance amount has to be cleared by the  beneficiaries through bank loan.

Premanath Jalligudde, Santosh Shaktinagar, President and General Secretary respectively of Action Committee of Landless People, Vasanth Achar, Krishnappa Konchady and many others participated in the protest.
