Addressing the protesters, Association General Secretary Santhosh Kumar said that based on new law on street vendors which has been enacted in the Centre, the urban local bodies should protect the rights of street vendors. A meeting was chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, after which ’a town vending committee’ was formed.

At the committee’s meeting it was decided to conduct a survey of street vendors, distribute identity cards to them and identify land to make unhindered arrangements for vendors. Though the ID cards were supposed to be distributed before July 20, the committee has behaved in a questionable manner evicting street vendors. “The Association condemns this,” he said.

The protesters sat in front of the Mangalore City Corporation door waiting for the corporators to arrive at the corporation for the general body meeting. Further reports are awaited.
