On September 5, 2017, the apext court had ordered the CBI to complete the probe in three months and submit a report.

In view of the CBI seeking more time, the court has issued notice to Ganapathi’s father M K Kushalappa, the petitioner, seeking his views. "After discussing the issue with our lawyers, we will convey our views to the apex court," Ganapathi’s brother M K Machaiah said, while exuding confidence in the CBI.

Ganapathi was found dead at a room in Vinayaka lodge here on July 7, 2016. His body was found hanging from a celing fan. Before his death, Ganapathi had alleged that he was harassed by minister K J George and two senior IPS officers, A M Prasad and Pronab Mohanty.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which probed the death, had filed a ’B’ report in the JMFC court here. Unhappy with the CID report, Ganapathi’s father had moved the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe. Subseuquently, the court had ordered the CBI to register an FIR against George and the two IPS officers and conduct a probe.
