Mangaluru, July 22, 2015 : Three passengers sustained minor injuries when an overcrowded private bus landed in a roadside gorge after hitting against the compound wall of a house at Vijayanagara near Chitranjalinagar in Kumpala on July 22, Wednesday morning.
The mishap occurred when the driver lost control over the vehicle after its axle broke all of a sudden. A major casualty was however averted as the bus would have otherwise fallen off a bridge into the river had it moved at least a little backward.
The route no. 44 bus named Ganesh was heading towards Bagambila from Mangaluru when its axle broke and it moved backwards. It then almost landed in a ditch after veering towards the compound wall of a nearby house. A child and two women are among the injured.
The bus remains almost overcrowded during peak hours as passengers travelling towards Mangaluru, board the bus even before it reaches its last stop at Bagambila, just to catch a seat. Moreover the road where the mishap took place is quite steep. It has been gathered that another bus that operates on this route was not in service today and the number of passengers who otherwise board this bus had doubled.
