Mangaluru, July 30, 2017: In a tragic incident a traditional fishing boat has reportedly capsized off the coast of Meenakalia in Panambur on Sunday morning. One of the occupants of boat is also said to be missing. Exact details of the mishap are yet to be known. The name of the missing fisherman is Premnath, aged about 50, according to Yatish Baikampady of Panambur Beach Development Project.
If six of the fishermen in the capsized bat were rescued by other fishermen, one person named Premnath Salian is suspected to have been drowned.
The names of three of the rescued fishermen are Ashok Mendon, Jagadish and Vijith.
The boat is said to belong to Ashok Mendon of Ullal. Local fisher folks have launched a massive search operation for the missing fisherman as there is still hope of a live rescue. Large number of curious onlookers has gathered on the beach close to the search area to learn about the fate of the missing fisherman.
Deep sea fishing is officially banned during the first two months of the monsoon. However traditional country boats are allowed to take to fishing close to the coast and in the estuaries.
