Bishop inaugurates Udupi Catholic women’s unit

Udupi, May 12, 2012 : Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the bishop of Mangalore Diocese, and Dr. Baptist Menezes, the Episcopal vicar for Udupi, inaugurated the Catholic Sthree Sanghatan of Udupi on May 11 Friday in the hall of Mother of Sorrows Church in Udupi.

The bishop presided over the inauguration ceremony, which was based on the theme “women are the root of the family and strength of society.’ Among the dignitaries on the dais were Dr. Menezes, the DCCW spiritual director for Mangalore Diocese; Fr. Ronald Cutinha, the parish priest; Fr. Fred Mascarenhas, the newly appointed Udupi district women’s spiritual director; Leena Roche, the president of the Udupi district Shthree Sanghatan; Veronica Saldanha, the secretary of the Brahmavar unit; Cynthia Dias, the vice president of the Udupi unit; Irene Pereira, the treasure of the Udyavar unit; and others.

It was also announced that Leena Roche would receive the first Samanvaya Award during the Samavesh of next year at Udupi. This award comprises a memento, a certificate, and Rs. 10,000.

Walter Pinto, the president of the Mangalore Diocese Catholic Sabha; Gladys Almeida, the former president of the Udupi ZP; Veronica Cornelio, the president of the Udupi District Congress; and Valerian Menezes, the president of the Catholic Cooperative Society; were also present.

A cultural show was conducted by the women of Shirva, Udupi, and Santhekatte parishes.

The bishop celebrated the Mass, while Fr. Mascarenhas, Fr. Cutinho, Fr.  Anthony Vaz, Fr. Joseph, and Fr. J. B. Crasta concelebrated.
