Belthangady: Various associations stage hunger strike for Justice to Sowjanya

 Belthangady, Jan 7, 2014: GV Srirama Reddy, CPI(M) State Secretary has alleged that the police were evincing great interest in suppressing the agitations and movements against atrocities on women rather than  investigating the cases thoroughly.

He was speaking after inaugurating  a day long hunger strike organised  in front of the Belthangady Taluk Office on January 6, Monday  seeking justice in the Sowjanya rape and murder case. The protest was organised by the DYFI, JMS SFI, Tribal Rights Protection Committee and other organisations.

“The state government itself has given details regarding the number of cases of missing of young women but is not investigating the same.  It has been over a year since the Sowjanya rape and murder took place. But there has been no thorough probe. The government has said that the case will be investigated by the CBI, but so far it has only cheated the people,” Reddy further alleged.

Kusumavathi, mother of Sowjanya who also spoke, made a humble appeal for justice to her daughter.

Muneer Katipalla, District President of DYFI, BM Bhat, CPI(M) leader, Lakshman Gowda, Pangala, Shekhar L and others spoke on the occasion.

Though it was earlier announced that as many as ten seers from various mutts will take part in the hunger strike, none of them had participated. Even the organisers were  unaware of the reason behind the absence of the seers.
