Mangalore, May 02, 2014: The birth anniversary of Saint Basaveshwara was celebrated at Town Hall in the city on May 2, Friday under the joint aegis of the District Administration, Department of Kannada and Culture and Karavali Veerashaiva Kshemabhivriddhi Sangha. Swami Girisiddeshwara Shivacharya of Basavanagudi, and Rudramuni Mahaswami of Gurupura Jangama Mutt, Mangalore inaugurated the programme.
Presiding over the function, Deputy Commissioner A,B. Ibrahim said Saint Basaveshwara, popularly known as Basavanna was a great social reformer who tried to eradicate social evils like casteism and untouchability.
It is nothing but an irony that the society is struggling to get rid of these social evils even today, he further said.There is a need to ponder over the teachings of the great personality, the DC further added.
Banavasi Somashekhar gave a talk on the life and teachings of Basaveshwara. Suma Arun Manvi, Founder-President of Akkamahadevi Veershaiva Mahila Sangha, Dakshina Kannada and Dr Katyayini, Lecturer at Dr M V Shetty College, Mangalore were also present.
A cultural programme based on the life of Basaveshwara was also organised.
