Moodbidri, Mar 29, 2014: Santosh Das alias Ghanashyam, the prime accused in the Siddantha Darshana Mandir burglary case, has been taken into police custody by the Moodbidri police on March 28, Friday.
The court has permitted a three day police custody of Das though the Moodbidri police had sought four days of custody in connection with the case of theft at Shankernarayana Mutt in Ashwathapura near Badagamijar on June 24, 2012.
Though Santosh Das from Odisha was arrested in connection with the theft of antique idols worth several crores of rupees from the Siddantha Darshana Mandir, his interrogations had revealed that he was involved in thefts in several other temples in the district.
In the burglary reported from Shankeranarayana Mutt, a golden idol of Goddess Sharadamble, a gold chain, all weighing 55 grams and a cash of Rs 5000 from the offering box were reported stolen. Initially, the Moodbidri police who failed to make headway in the investigation had filed a B report in the court on December 31, 2012.
Here it is worth mentioning that Santosh Das has already secured bail in some cases. Now with him entrusted to three more days of police custody, there is information that Santosh Das has lodged a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission.
