Bantwal, July 6, 2013 : Tension prevailed at Peruvai near here when clashes broke out between two groups over the issue of the interception of a vehicle which was allegedly transporting cattle, by Bhajrangdal activists on July 5, Friday night.
Sources said the cattle was being taken to Kerala from Ninthikallu in Sullia in a Maruti Omni vehicle. According to reports a youth named Chethan who saw the cattle being transported tipped off the Bhajrangdal, whose activists waylaid the vehicle at Peruvai.
If the driver took to his heels, a person named Naveen (20) from Yennur was trapped and handed over to the police. He is said to be a vegetable seller. He is learnt to have told that one Shamshuddin from Yennur was driving the vehicle and that he had accompanied him on his request. Reportedly when the cattle including two calves and a bull were being loaded into a pick-up vehicle someone commented that a person present at the spot by named Ranjith Marla was an expert in loading cattle. This led to an altercation when Ranjith’s father questioned those who passed the comment. Eventually, there was a fist fighting between two groups and police had to resort to a mild lathi charge to quell the mob.
The situation is said to be presently under control.
