Bantwal,Feb 15, 2014 : Nearly five acre of Acacia forest land at Ananthady village of Bantwal taluk was gutted in a fire that erupted in the area on February 14, Friday. Hundreds of devotees who had arrived in the village for the Mecchi fair were panic-stricken on noticing the devastating fire.
Later, the Puttur and Bantwal Fire service vehicles which rushed to the spot, extinguished the fire with the help of locals. The fire service men had a tough time as they had to go by foot to the forest area in their fire fighting mission.
The suspicion is that some miscreants had deliberately set the forest area on fire. Fire service officers Sunder and A Lokesh of Bantwal and Puttur fire service stations respectively, Ramesh, Deputy Conservator of Forest and others supervised the operations.
