B C Road: Doctor taken into custody for medical negligence in pregnant woman’s death case

Bantwal, Feb 8, 2014 :  The Bantwal police on February 7, Friday took Dr Rameshanand Somayaji of the Somayaji Hospital in BC Road to  custody amid tight security after  hundreds of locals staged a protest  outside the hospital and also on the National Highway blaming medical negligence  of the hospital staff for the death of a young woman who was admitted to the hospital for delivery.

The police had to inevitably take the doctor to custody as the agitators were unrelenting and were demanding action.It may be recalled here that  Chanchalakshi (29), wife of Naveen Kumar of BC Road who was admitted to the hospital for her second delivery, died after she developed complications after she was allegedly given injection to induce labour pain. Even the child later died in the womb.

The incident triggered protests by locals who blamed the hospital authorities.

Meanwhile, locals have also urged the  Health Minister to take action against negligent hospitals considering the fact that several cases of deaths of pregnant women  were reported n BC Road and Bantwal areas in the recent past.
