Automobile gas cylinder shortage hits rickshaw drivers

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 3, 2012: The city is facing acute shortage of automobile LPG cylinders due to the temporary closure of the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) from May 2, Wednesday.

Rickshaws were seen waiting in long queues at petrol bunks for gas cylinders. Currently, automobile gas cylinders are available in just a handful of places such as Society Petrol Bunk in Balmatta, at Nagori near Capitanio, and at Go Gas in Bendoorwell.

Since the MCC had stopped supplying water to the MRPL to deal with the water crisis in the city, MRPL is forced to shut down its units temporarily.

Janatha Auto Rickshaw Sarige Sangha President Ashok Kumar Shetty said that auto rickshaw drivers are suffering now due to shortage of gas cylinders. Concerned authorities are least bothered though auto drivers are struggling to get gas cylinders and some of the petrol bunks reserve cylinders for regular customers, he added.
