Mangalore, Jul 12, 2013: Members of Autorickshaw Drivers’ Union staged a protest in front of the DC office on July 12, Friday opposing the recent statement by Health and Family Welfare Minister UT Khader to allow rural permit autorickshaws to run in the city.
Speaking on the occasion, Ali Hassan, President of the Co-ordination Committee, strongly opposed the move and added it would hit hard the business of autorickshaws plying in the city.
He also alleged that most of the autorickshaws in the city are running illegally as they ought to operate in rural areas. He further pointed out that as per rules, autorickshaws which secured permits after 1998 were allowed to run only in rural areas.
He also recalled the promise made by senior congress leader to do justice to autorickshaw drivers and also pointed out that if rural permit autos were allowed to enter the city, it would create traffic snarls. He at the same time said rural autos will be allowed to enter the city in case of emergency.
