Mangalore, Jan 11, 2014 : An Alzheimer’s Association aimed at coming to the aid of Alzheimer’s affected people has come into being in Mangalore, thanks to the initiative of Jerardin D’Souza, a Founder Member of the Karnataka State Christian Minorities Development Council (KSCMDC).
D’Souza with the help of Richard Shreder from Seattle in USA who has been a director at various Alzheimer’s facilities for over two decades, has been able to realise his plans of having an Association.
The two had even interacted with various leaders including Dr Olinda Pereira, the founder principal of Roshini Nilaya, Dr S N Bhat and gerontologist Dr Audrey Pinto. Following a suggestion by psychiatrist Dr Ravish Tunga, they visited Nympha Sadan, Abhayashrama and other places and the need to have an association for the affected resulted in the Alzheimer’s Association which will have professionals, social workers, psychiatrists, caregivers, physicians and the families of the affected. As there is little awareness in the society about Alzheimer’s Richard is expected to guide and train the caregivers.
Richard was even felicitated recently during the District Lions Meet where it was announced that a meet of volunteers and social workers will be held at YMCA, Balmatta on January 14 at 5 pm.
