Ashwini’s family believes she is innocent

Mangalore, July 6, 2011: Akkunji, which is located near Siddapur, made headlines when one of its residents Ashwini Chidanand Shetty won gold for the country in the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. Unfortunately, Akkunji has attracted media attention for the most unfortunate reasons recently, because its star Ashwini Akkunji is involved in a doping controversy.

Ashwini’s family is upset because they firmly believe that Ashwini, who they have always known as a hard-working and determined person, will never resort to drug abuse in a bid to perform better.

 

 

Mr. Chidanand Shetty, Ashwini’s father, believes in her innocence and states that Ashwini is talented and does not require banned drugs to boost her performance. He states that innocent athletes are becoming victims because of poor coordination between athletic federations and officials, foreign and Indian coaches, and sports medicine specialists. Stating that his daughter refuses to take medication even for petty ailments, he said that he cannot believe that she has taken drugs to boost her performance.

Ashwini’s parents are very supportive toward Ashwini and have urged her not to lose heart, but to march ahead with determination. Speaking on the matter, Ashwini’s mother says that her daughter was very careful about what she ate and feels that she might have failed the dope test because she accidentally consumed the wrong type of food.

The family has welcomed the decision of the government to sack the Ukrainain coach and is now praying and hoping that the controversy will not wreck Ashwini’s future and her dreams of participating in the Olympics.
