Areca nut growers here feel better with Ministry Market Intervention Scheme

areca nut industryMangaluru, Dec 18, 2016: Reports confirm that union ministry of agriculture and farmers’ welfare sanctioned market intervention scheme (MIS) for areca nut. Accordingly, growers of white and red variety of areca nut in Karnataka will get Rs 251/kg and Rs 270/kg respectively up to December 31. Union minister for agriculture and farmers’ welfare Radha Mohan Singh announced it when a delegation of areca nut growers led by S R Satishchandra, president of CAMPCO Ltd called on him at Delhi a couple of days ago. 

Satishchandra, head of the Mangaluru city-based multi-state cooperative, who welcomed and appreciated the move of the ministry said the notification has been forwarded to the state government for further action. The delegation who thanked the minister for having sanctioned MIS for areca growers urged him to extend the same up to May 31, 2017 since market arrivals will commence only from January. They also urged him to extend the MIS to farmers in Kerala as well.

The delegation also met Nirmala Sitharaman, union minister for commerce and industries; Ananth Kumar, union minister for chemicals and fertilisers, D V Sadananda Gowda, union minister for statistics and program implementation; B S Yeddyurappa, Ananth Kumar Hegde Shobha Karandlaje, and Nalin Kumar Kateel, MPs from areca nut growing regions of the state and thanked them for having impressed on the ministry to sanction MIS for the areca nut growers.
