Bhatkal, May 28, 2014: Waqas Barmawar, an MBA student hailing from Bhatkal, who was arrested on Saturday evening by Bangalore City Crime Branch sleuths for allegedly sending an objectionable SMS on a cellphone about prime minister-designate Narendra Modi, has been released after interrogation first by Bangalore police and then by Belgaum police.
He was released as the officials who were investigating the case could not find any evidence that the SMS emanated from his mobile. “What had been my fault, that I was arrested?”, asked Waqas on his release.
Waqas, a 25-year-old MBA student of AITM Bhatkal, is an AAP activist and son of noted Nawayati and Urdu poet Samiullaah Barmawar. He and his associates, Osama Olangar, Rehmatullaah, Sada Kola and Mujaheed came to the City two weeks ago for a summer internship training programme in Bangalore. They were staying at Vasanthnagar.
On Saturday evening, he was held along with his friends by the city police’s central crime branch for allegedly circulating an SMS ridiculing Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi. The other four were released on Sunday afternoon after questioning but Waqas was detained in police custody for further interrogation. He was taken to Khanapur in Belgaum for questioning but was freed as the officials did not find any substantial evidence against him.
