Mangaluru/ Udupi, March 13, 2024: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have experienced a notable rise in temperature. In Dakshina Kannada (DK) district, Mangaluru and Moodbidri have been identified as areas with normal heat levels. However, the shifting climate, marked by elevated temperatures, has adversely affected various animals and birds, especially productive livestock such as cattle and poultry.

In response, the Department of Animal Husbandry has issued advisory measures, focusing on breeding cattle and enhancing veterinary services. High temperatures during the summer season induce stress among animals, leading to decreased food intake, diminished milk yield, and increased susceptibility to heat-related fatalities, especially in meat chickens. Additionally, animals and birds become more vulnerable to diseases, with poultry being particularly prone to respiratory ailments.

To ensure the welfare of animals during the scorching summer months, several proactive measures are recommended. Grazing should be limited to cooler hours, with animals sheltered during the hottest part of the day. Access to clean, cool water must be provided continuously, and arrangements should be made to address water scarcity issues. Shaded grazing areas, water sprinklers, and proper ventilation through fans are essential to mitigate heat stress. Regular spraying of animals with water, adjusting feeding schedules, and supplementing their diet with salt are crucial practices. Prompt veterinary attention is necessary for any health issues.

Similarly, ensuring the well-being of poultry requires attention to various factors. Continuous access to clean water is vital, with measures in place to maintain adequate ventilation and shade within poultry sheds. Supplementing water with vitamin C and electrolytes, along with providing shade and ventilation during peak heat hours, can help prevent heat stress and heatstroke. Regular cleaning of water tanks is essential to prevent the spread of harmful microorganisms.

Ultimately, these measures are aimed at safeguarding the welfare of all animals and birds during the hot summer season, emphasizing the importance of humane treatment and proactive care.
