Mangalore, Aug 30, 2011: In response to the honor bestowed on him by the Salil Shetty Felicitation Committee on Tuesday, Salil Shetty, the general secretary of Amnesty International (AI), said that AI is all for the abolishment of death penalty.

Further speaking on the matter, he said that AI opposes death penalty because it violates the right to life and will pressurize the Indian government to sign the moratorium pact on execution. AI already has 3 million members in 150 countries, campaigning for people’s right to live, he added.

He also said that AI is working hard to secure the release of Indian prisoners, including Binayak Sen, who were imprisoned without a fair trial, adding that AI is also involved in a struggle put an end to torture in police stations.

A Mangalorean by birth, Salil also expressed his love for his mother tongue Tulu. He recalled the happy days of his childhood, his favorite evening snack golibagje, and expressed his desire to watch Oriyardori Asal, a Tulu movie by Vijayakumar Kodialbail.
