Air Crash Victim’s Families Association hires Swedish law firm

Mangaloretoday News Network

Mangalore, March 14: The Air Crash Victims’ Families Association, which is bent on fighting for the rights of the victims of the Mangalore air crash of May 22, 2010, engaged a Swedish law firm called Advokaterna Liman and Partners on Sunday to help them settle compensation claims.

President Mohammed Beary said that the association has discussed issues such as fee modalities and others with Stephan Eriksson, the representative of the firm, before hiring the firm.

The firm is to charge a fee of 30 percent above a certain compensation limit. For instance, if the victim used to draw a monthly salary of Rs. 50,000, the firm will not charge any fees for compensation of Rs. 1 crore or above. The firm processed a number of documents on Sunday and the firm’s representative plans to collect some more documents during the third week of March. According to Beary, the firm will handle around 75 cases. The firm’s representative will visit Dubai and collect documents from those who work in Dubai.

The association has engaged the Swedish firm because they are not satisfied with the services of Mulla and Mulla, which was appointed by Air India. The association wants compensation according to the life worth of each victim, not just according to his/her monthly salary.

Pradeep G. Kotian, one of the survivors, expressed dissatisfaction with the total compensation of Rs. 3.70, which he was offered. He says that he is still not able to lift heavy things because his wrist is still weak and that the doctors have advised exercise. He also wants a job that provides the same lifestyle as his pre-crash job in Dubai and also ample compensation for loss of income following the crash.

Reportedly, Mulla and Mulla has called around 70 families and have settled a total of 50 cases.
