Mangalore, Aug 8, 2012: A blood donation and health check-up camp will be held as part of the Mangalore Airport’s diamond jubilee celebrations at 8:45 a.m. on August 19 at Ravindra Kala Bhavan in University College, Mangalore. 

The camp will be jointly organized by the Airport Authority of India (AAI), AAI Sports Control Board (AAISCB), Nitte University, and the Indian Red Cross Society.

Addressing reporters at a press conference held today, K. Thejomaya, coordinator of the Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebration Committee, said the health check-up camp will be held for the benefit of poor people who cannot pay the consultancy fees charged by doctors. The camp will include a dental check up, which will include a video clipping on dental health, and an eye check up, during which free spectacles will be provided if required. A heart check up will also form part of the camp, he added. 

Stating that free treatment will be given by doctors and that K. S. Hegde Medical Academy will provide free medicines, he added that 500 – 600 poor people are expected to take part in this camp. 

AAISCB Secretary Shravan Kumar said that the blood donation camp will be held because Wenlock Hospital and Lady Goschen have shortage of blood in their blood banks. The organizers expect to collect around 100 units of blood, which will be used for poor patients. NSS students, members of various unions, and members of the general public are expected to donate blood. 

Mr. Thejomaya said that Dr. K. Shantaram Shetty, pro chancellor of Nitte University, will deliver a speech on the occasion.
