Manipal, Dec 22, 2013: A doctor who is on a mission of creating health awareness among Indians, and has embarked upon a bicycle tour from Kashmir to Tiruvananthapuram for the purpose, arrived in Manipal on December 21, Saturday.
Dr Unni Karunakeran who had graduated from KMC Manipal around 25 years ago, and had worked abroad, has now decided to make a mark in the field of social service.
Dr Karunakeran who began his bicycle tour on October 12, plans to conclude his 5000 km long tour at Tiruvananthapuram on February 1. He said he was visiting medical colleges enroute and interacting with medical students on his experiences.
“ I loved cycle ride since my childhood. When I was a medical student in Manipal in 1988 I had travelled from Srinagar to Delhi in a bike. Though I had then dreamt of touring the nation in my bicycle, my dream is realised now after 25 years,” Dr Karunakeran added.
He is also a member of Doctor Without Border-MSF, a medical organisation which has secured the Noble Peace Prize in 1999 for its social service. He informed that the organisation is also functioning in India in Bihar, Manipura, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Nagaland.
