Udupi, Jan 17, 2014: Meera Saxena, Member of the Karnataka State Human Rights commission has informed that 450 out of the 791 cases of human rights violation registered in Udupi district between 2007 and 2013 have been resolved while 341 cases were pending.
Addressing a meeting at the DC office here on January 17, Friday, she said contrary to the past when there were complaints over property matters, in the recent times people have come up with more complaints pertaining to harassment of women, environmental pollution etc. She said during the year 2013, the Commission had received a total of 5884 cases of which 3264 cases were resolved. Of the total complaints 603 were registered suo moto and 63 of these have been resolved, she informed.
She also informed that the human rights violation cases registered from DK and Udupi districts were less when compared to other parts of the state.
When one of the participant expressed apprehensions over the environmental problems that may crop up due to the coming up of a cement factory close by UPCL, Deputy Commissioner MT Reju said all measures would be taken to minimise pollution.
Complaints from the public were accepted by the SHRC member on the occasion.
