Chennai, Sep 4 , 2015: As many as 40 passengers of a Mangaluru-bound express train were injured on Friday after its five coaches derailed near Cuddalore district, about 200 kilometres from Chennai.

Train No.16859 Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed near Poovanur near Vridhachalam around 2 a.m.


Police and railway officials said that the mishap occurred around 2 a.m. after five coaches of Chennai-Mangalore Express derailed at Puvanur in Vriddhachalam.

The injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals, official said, adding that the train services on the busy route were disrupted for sometime. However, trains were later operated on alternative route but they were running late, official added.

Detailing Chennai-Mangalore Express derailment, Chief Public Relations Officer of Railways Anil Saxena on Friday assured that the Railway Ministry is monitoring the situation, adding that best medical facilities will be given to the injured.

"One person faced serious injuries, three people got simple injuries and 35 other injured were given medical aid on spot," said Saxena.

Five rear coaches of the Chennai-Mangalore Express were derailed. The affected coaches would be disconnected and the train would be taken forward.

"Officials reached the spot and the relief operation is going on in full swing. The Railway Ministry is monitoring the situation. Our railway minister has instructed us to give the best medical facilities to the injured," added Saxena.

Consequent to the above derailment, train services in this section have been diverted or cancelled. Train No.16859 (accident affected train), has left Vriddhachalam station at 07.25 hours with its remaining 17 coaches and is expected to arrive Podanur at 16.30 hours today.

The railway are neglecting the maintenance and hence effecting the life of public. These days its risky to travel in trains? There in so much of profit to Central Government but do not maintain.
