Bantwal, Dec 26, 2013: Bantwal police have arrested four persons who have been accused of attacking a youth for the sole reason that he was friendly with a Muslim woman. The incident which reminded one of the growing religious intolerance in the district in the recent past, took place at Guddekodi in Kedila village of Bantwal taluk on December 21 evening one Jayaram Poojari (25), a lorry driver by profession was on his way home.
It is learnt, Jayaram who used to visit a stone quarry at Kukkaje knew a Muslim woman of the area. Taking this issue seriously, it is believed that some fundamentalist forces had followed him that evening right from Kalladka and then waylaid him near Gadiyara where he was brutally assaulted by even targeting his private organs.
Jayaram who fell unconscious was later admitted to Wenlock Hospital in Mangalore where he is said to be recovering now.
It is learnt, the assailants had also stolen a cash of Rs 4,500 and cell phone of Jayaram. Those arrested are Mohammad Fazal, Adam, Adib and Salman Faris. Police are on the lookout for three others namely Umar, Nazeer and Riyaz who are absconding.
It is learnt, there was a delay in arresting the accused as there was a confusion among the police on the jurisdiction of the police station mainly because the incident had taken place in a border area.
