Mangalore, Feb 5, 2014 : Three cases of attempt to smuggle gold through the Mangalore International Airport were foiled by the alert customs officials on February 4, Tuesday. Gold worth Rs 65.29 lakhs were seized in all.
In the first case reported on Tuesday, customs officials apprehended one Basheed Choori Abdul Rahiman from Uliyathadka in Kasargod who was found in possession of 13 gold coils hidden in an electric hot plate.
The value of the seized gold is Rs 29,78,957 and it weighed 999.650 grams. The passengers had arrived by a Jet Airways flight from Dubai at 5.30 am.
In another case, gold wires cleverly hidden in an aluminium frame of a suitcase were recovered from Nazar Theakkupuram of Pallikere in Kasargod who arrived by an Air India Express flight in the morning. The gold weighed 699.900 grams and was valued at Rs 20,85,702.
In yet another case, circular plates of gold hidden in insulated hot cases worth Rs 14,65,117 and weighing 491.650 were seized from Abdul Sattar of Pallikere in Kasargod. He too had arrived by an Air India Express flight from Dubai.
The operations were led by Assistant Commissioner of Customs Krishna Kumar Prasad. All the three men were produced before the court.
