Those arrested are Chandra Naik (28) of Madur in Jadkal, Ravi (29) of Heroor and Ashok Mogaveera (25) of Maddugudde. The value of the recovered idols dating back to 500 years has been estimated at Rs 50 lakhs.

Police said Ashok who used to visit a relative’s house located near the Basadi had hatched the plan to loot the Basadi and had colluded with two friends to execute the plan.  It is learnt, they had hidden the stolen idols  in a forest area near Ravi’s house.

Incidentally, as the theft took place after the annual festival, it did not come to the notice of the Basadi management immediately.

The trio was spotted  lurking suspiciously in Kundapur bus stand area on June 5, Thursday and were  subsequently questioned and arrested.
Investigations are underway.
