Kankavali, Dec 7, 2014: Sixteen passengers sustained injuries when a JCB (excavating machine) fell on the railway tracks between Kankavali and Sindhudurg on the Konkan Railway route, hitting the Jan Shatabdi Express that was on its way to Mumbai on Sunday evening, December 7, 2014.


“The machine was of a private party conducting quarrying activity close to the railway track,” informed an official. The casualties were transferred to local hospital in ambulances. Railway authorities have started a probe into the incident.

Out of the sixteen passengers, 13 suffered minor injuries and 3 grievous, however none of the injuries are fatal. The injured passengers were immediately shifted by Konkan Railway to Government Hospital at Kankavali. Konkan Railway officials rushed to the site and brought about an early clearance of the railway track.

As a result of the accident, train no. 10103 Mandovi Exp was detained for 1 hour and 10105 Diva-Sawantwadi passenger train for 1 hr 50 mins. The railway track is not affected due to the accident and the train services have resumed.

As per the directives of the CMD of KRCL, Shri Bhanu Prakash Tayal, not only the section was cleared at the earliest but the free train journey passes have been arranged for the families of injured passengers who wished to visit them at the hospital.

An FIR is being lodged by KRCL against the Stone Quarry owner.
