Mangalore, Sep 19,2014: HelpAge India, in collaboration with Vishwas Trust organised a ‘Mobilization meeting of Elders’ at St Antony’s Homes for the Poor in Valencia, and launched the ‘Neighbourhood Project’ on Friday, September 19.
Inaugurating the project, Ms. Olinda Pereira, director of Vishwas Trust said that the elderly people are unable to move around due to their age and are not able of seek help in time. The Neighborhood Group formed today will help to contact each other and help each other in need. It will provide them emotional support as well, she added.
The Neighbourhood Project is one of the dream project of Vishwas Trust. Realizing the isolation and loneliness of the elderly people, this project will help them to great extant. The Neighbourhood Project promotes networking among families and the elderly.
Mr. Prakash, representing HelpAge India said that the lack of social security and personal touch in the lives of the elderly a great concern with the disintegration of joint families. The networking and groups in the neighborhood will create bonds between community and neighbours in the society.
He said that the most important thing was to create awareness among people in the society and build a network in the neighbourhood for the elderly. It helps in addressing the needs and problems of the elderly. Most of them merely require reassurance, a helping hand or a sympathetic ear, which can be brought through individuals as part of promoting neighbourliness and neighbourhood groups, he said.
Fr O’Neil D’Souza, director of St Antony Homes, Suresh Shetty, social worker, and many others were present on the occasion.
