Mangaluru, July 18, 2019: A delegation of MPs of coastal and Malnad regions, led by Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has met Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr Harshavardhan in New Delhi on July 17, Wednesday and apprised the minister that the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute has made it clear there was no instance to prove consumption of area has any adverse effect on the health of people.
The move by the MPs came in the backdrop of a recent statement made by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey while replying to an unstarred questioned in the Lok Sabha that there were concerns about the carcinogenic effects of areca on various organs of the body as revealed in certain studies.
Responding to the appeal of the MPs, Health Minister Harshavardhan said it was the erstwhile UPA Government which had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court stating that areca was hazardous to health. He assured to take step to withdraw the affidavit and added that meetings have been held in this regard.
The delegation included Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, Davanagere MP G M Siddeshwar and Chitradurga Parliamentarian Narayana Swami.
