Sublime Lyrics

Sublime Lyrics is the first solo show by Nagalingappa Shankarappa Pattar, popularly N S Pattar. An art teacher by profession, Pattar gets his inspiration for his abstraction from nature full of bright colours- cobalt blues, earthy ochres, vermillion reds, vibrant saffrons, crimson reds etc. find dominance in his work signifying the variety of natural surroundings. Colours become medium for aesthetic construction. Artist Pattar, further gets inspiration from Indian miniature tradition particularly Rajasthani miniatures as also calligraphy in Jain manuscripts. The Indian spirituality with its different motifs and iconography in scriptures find space in his artistic oeuvre.

In this series of paintings, the visual depiction is achieved through, line, colour, form and texture. His artistic repertoire includes expressions of experiences and their ‘inner imagery’. Artist opines that physical world pursues the abstract as the one that is non-existing. Abstract is metaphysical, of the artist’s inner vision, related to the soul and a continuous dialogue of the concept called ‘the infinite’. These expressions assume the mathematical forms and stem as the dialogues between shapes. One form guides the other and a intertwining harmony is created. These essays of harmony’ or accounts of ‘Inner rhythm’ stand as symbols of the inner voice, like the gentle swaying of breeze or the rhythm of music and the discerning viewer is led to delve deeper into these artworks.

An empty canvas and an empty mind are the starting point of artists’ expression. N S Pattar says ‘I start from nothing and traverse through my life’s different experiences and wisdoms and they manifest in different forms.’ This artistic enquiry creates opportunity and it becomes matter. The process goes further until the time the artworks itself announces a stop to its further journey, signifying the creation of an artwork. The experiences of the artist, his self-influences, creative sparks, and aspects of Indian aesthetics, colour theories have all have been given a rendering onto the canvas in both physical and metaphysical ways. All these are suitably combined to form the very ‘essence’ of his artworks. Thus artwork born in vacuity is filled with magnetism and positivity. The positivity inhabits the artwork in its sublime forms. It inspires and creates. What is created becomes lyrical.
