‘Demon’ Mahishasura’s behind the scene adventures!

Mangalore Today News Network

Byndoor, Feb 18, 2014 : An interesting sequence of events that took place during  the staging of a Devi Mahatme’ Harake bayalata in a rural area near Byndoor,  will certainly bring smiles on many faces.

Auto-rickshaw-...

The Yakshagana  show had commenced as usual and the lead role ‘Mahishasura’ had made his appearance in the first scene and had left the stage. As  the actor who had donned the role had some time for himself before he had to appear on stage again, he felt like resting for some time.  He looked around and found a goods rickshaw   and without thinking a second he   slipped into the vehicle and soon fell asleep.

The rickshaw  driver who was away watching the Yakshagana arrived after some time and decided to go home. Unaware that a ‘Mahishasura’ was in slumber  in his vehicle, he headed home.

Just as the autorickshaw  travelled upto a distance of one km, the driver realised someone was behind. He turned back and was shocked to see a demonic figure. For a moment he thought some demon or  evil spirit had boarded his autorickshaw enroute and increased the speed of his vehicle. Finally, the “Mahishasura” spoke and narrated the incident. By then the autorickshaw had  travelled upto four kms.

Though the driver stopped the vehicle he did not muster courage to come out of the auto by opening the driver’s cabin. But as soon as ‘Mahishasura’ stepped out, he sped forth abandoning  the poor ‘demon’ on mid road. There was none to hear the pleas of  Mahishasura.’

He then decided to head towards the Yakshagana venue and began to run towards the direction from where he heard the  sound of the beating of the drums. As he neared the venue, he heard the artiste on the stage summoning him ‘Magane, Mahishasura( My son, Mahishasura). Realising that he had no time to rest, he  entered the  stage directly. But poor ‘Mahishasura’ he who ought to have thundered was panting for breathe. Suddenly his hands went to his head. Oh God! The Mahishasura’s hall mark, his horns were missing,  in all probability landing on the ground somewhere in his haste to reach the venue.

Whatever it is, the Yakshagana show continued  undisturbed, thanks to Mahishasura’s  marathon run.
