A week on, Nepal floods death toll rises to 1,127; over 4,800 remain missing

Kathmandu, September 2, 2026: The death toll from the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal last week has risen to 1,127, while 4,858 people remain missing, police said on Wednesday.

The highest number of bodies was recovered from Chitwan (348), followed by Nawalparasi East (217), Nawalparasi West (190) and Nuwakot (155). Gorkha reported 66 deaths, Dhading 59, Rasuwa 45 and Tanahu 38.

Of the 1,127 bodies recovered, postmortem and legal identification procedures have been completed for 1,113, while 95 bodies have been handed over to their families.

Nepal Police has uploaded details of 911 unidentified bodies on its website to help families identify missing relatives.

Security forces have so far rescued 6,541 people from flood-hit areas, with 7,912 police personnel deployed for search and rescue, relief operations and the management of recovered bodies.

Police teams are also shifting families from vulnerable areas, clearing debris-blocked roads and coordinating relief efforts with local authorities and residents.

The flash floods, triggered by an ice and rock collapse or avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border, devastated several towns and villages across northern and central Nepal on August 26.
