The BJP has sought to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday on Friday historic by administering a record Covid-19 vaccine doses. Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said this is the fastest pace at which one crore doses have been administered.

As of Friday morning, India had administered a total of over 77 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

On August 31, India administered over 1.30 crore doses, the highest single-day vaccinations so far. India achieved the one-crore doses milestone for the first time on August 27 this year.

"A gift to the Prime Minister on behalf of the health workers and the countrymen.Today, on the birthday of @NarendraModi, India has crossed the historical figure of 2 crore vaccines in a day, setting a new record. Well done India!" Mansukh Mandaviya said in a tweet in Hindi on Friday.

Mandaviya had called for a major push to the coronavirus vaccination drive for Prime Minister Modi’s birthday on Friday, saying it would be the perfect gift for him.BJP national president JP Nadda said, This figure is a reflection of New India under PM @narendramodi’s leadership. India has set a path in successfully fighting COVID with visionary & diligent leadership. Congratulations to those who got vaccinated & those who made this campaign a success."

Earlier, National Health Authority chief RS Sharma had tweeted,"Celebrating the relentless efforts of India’s vaccinators against COVID-19, we have added a ticker to show vaccinations happening in near real-time. We are currently clocking over 42,000 vaccinations/minute or 700/second."

Last week, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the country had also jabbed more than 99 per cent of healthcare workers (HCWs) and frontline workers (FLWs ) with at least one shot of Covid-19 vaccine.

India took 85 days to touch the 10-crore vaccination mark, 45 more days to cross the 20-crore mark and 29 more days to reach 30 crore. The country took 24 days to reach 40 crore from 30 crore doses and then 20 more days to cross the 50-crore vaccination mark on August 6. It took 19 more days to go past the 60-crore mark and only 13 days more days to reach 70 crore on September 7.

The vaccinations reported on Friday come against the backdrop of an increase in the supply of vaccine doses to the states.

The country’s inoculation drive has been ramped up through advanced visibility of vaccine availability to states and UTs to enable better planning by them and streamlining the vaccine supply chain, the Health Ministry has said.
