West Bengal cops claim Tuktuki Mondal back all by herself

Mangalore Today News Network

Kolkata, July 21, 2015: Tuktuki Mondal, a minor girl from West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas district, who was allegedly abducted by some local goons, came back to her Magrahat home on Monday, police said.

West Bengal inspector general (law and order) Anuj Sharma said, "She has come back by herself. The girl has said that she does not want to go back to her parents. We are investigating the matter further."

Sources said the girl is currently in police custody and will be produced in court on Tuesday. She was abducted on May 4, on her way back from the bank. She was allegedly kidnapped by one local youth Babusona Ghazi, 18, (son of Ramzan Ghazi, a locally influential law clerk) and his gang of around eight friends.

Earlier this year too, in February, Tuktuki had fled home. The local police were intimated about her escape. It was said that the minor was allegedly taken to a secluded place under the jurisdiction of the Magrahat police station area and gang-raped.

Tuktuki’s father Subhash Mondal, a day-labour, had approached the village headman and the local police seeking help.

Tuktuki’s family hails from Khapur village, that falls under the Kalikapota police station area, also within the Magrahat belt - a sensitive pocket located near the Indo-Bangladesh border in South 24-Parganas.

Locals said that Tuktuki is a bright student and is slated to appear for Madhyamik (Class - X board exam) in 2016.

The National Commission of Women (NCW) chairman Lalitha Kumaramangalam also met Tuktuki’s parents on Monday to discuss the issue and said that crimes against women in Bengal have "witnessed an increase".

"There has been a rapid rise in crimes against women in Bengal. It was not so earlier," she said, while leading a three-member team to the village in Magrahat.

The state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also been staging a sit-in demonstration outside Magrahat police station for the past five days.

"The police are now trying to cover up the whole incident to save face. We are happy that Tuktuki has come back home. We think it is a result of the BJP’s five-day long agitation, protesting against Tuktuki’s abduction," BJP state secretary Ritesh Tiwari told Mail Today

Tiwari mentioned that the BJP central leadership has given full support to the protest by sending the party’s parliamentary team and National Women’s Commission chief to look into the matter.

"We are ending our protest at Magrahaat on a victorious note. It is moral win for not just, but also the family members of Tuktuki. However, the state unit of BJP will continue the sit-in agitation across the state from July 21, demanding safety and security of women in Bengal," he said.
