Vidisha well accident: PM Modi announces Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia for kin of dead

Bhopal, Jul 17, 2021: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of those who died in an accident in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha district.

At least 11 people were killed in Vidisha while trying to rescue a girl who had fallen into a 50-ft deep well on Thursday.

"Anguished by the tragedy in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh. My condolences to the bereaved families. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of those who lost their lives," a tweet from the Prime Minister’s Office read.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh also announced an ex gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of those who died in the incident. The CM also announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 and free medical treatment to those who were injured.On Thursday, a girl fell into a 50-feet deep well at Ganj Basoda, about 50 km from the Vidisha headquarters. Some villagers climbed down to rescue her while others stood on the parapet wall around it to help them.

However, the wall suddenly crashed, throwing those standing on its edge into the water.

Later, a tractor was engaged in the rescue operation along with the police. However, the tractor and four policemen skidded into the well when the area around it caved in, eyewitnesses said.

According to latest reports, the police have recovered 11 bodies and more than 19 people have been rescued. More people are believed to be trapped inside the well.
