Four people were detained on Thursday in connection with the case, two of whom have now been arrested. Police said one of the two arrested men poisoned the three girls. The girls were poisoned after one of them rejected the man’s advances, police said.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Lucknow Inspector General of Police (IG) Laxmi Singh said investigators have received information that the girls were seen running on the day of the incident.

’Mixed pesticide in water, wanted to kill one of the girls’

The two persons arrested in connection with the crime have been identified as Vinay alias ’Lambu’ and one juvenile. Vinay’s farm is adjacent to the farm owned by one of the girls, IG Laxmi Singh added.

Vinay confessed that he became friends with one of the girls during the lockdown and they used to talk to each other in the fields. He confessed his love to her but she refused his advances.

This is when Vinay mixed pesticides in drinking water and fed it to the girl. He did not know that all three girls drank from the same water bottle.

The senior police officer went on to add that ’namkeen’ packets bought by two of the girls and the prime accused were recovered from the scene of the crime along with a cigarette butt and an empty water bottle.

Call detail records of accused Vinay place him on the field at the time of the incident, IG Laxmi Singh said.

UP govt announces compensation for girls’ families

Unnao District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar said the Uttar Pradesh government will award a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased girls.

Another Rs 2 lakh will be given to the family of the girl battling for her life, DM Ravindra Kumar said adding that the cost of her treatment will be borne by the state government.

The three girls were found in critical condition in a field near Baburaha village in UP’s Unnao on Wednesday evening. A preliminary autopsy had hinted at poisoning and the police had registered a case of murder. While two of the three girls died, the third is battling for her life. Her condition is said to be stable.
