Surprised at Supreme Court’s NJAC verdict: Law minister Gowda

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, October 16, 2015: Expressing surprise over the Supreme Court’s verdict declaring the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) as unconstitutional, Law Minister Sadananda Gowda on Friday said that his ministry will decide the future course over the issue only after consulting with the prime minister.

The Supreme Court’s decision invited varied response from political leaders and senior lawyers. Here’s look at who said what:

# I am really surprised with this verdict. Government represents people’s will.  We have to go through the text, will talk to law officers, senior colleagues and PM, then we will decide: Sadanand Gowda, law minister

This shouldn’t be seen as government vs judiciary case. Certain concerns have been raised by the court. They agree improvements can be made. You never know a third alternative may evolve: Salman Khurshid, former law minister.

# Mood of the nation was in favour of the new legislation. Let us go through the Supreme Court’s verdict first: Venkaiah Naidu, Parliamentary Affairs minister

# To strike down NJAC is completely surprising: Soli Sorabjee, former Attorney-General of India

# NJAC had support of parlaiment and people, goverment stands for judicial freedom. NJAC not NDA brainchild: Ravi Shankar Prasad, Communications and Information Technology minister

# Supreme Court’s verdict has revived the old collegium system: Prashant Bhushan, senior lawyer
