In a statement shared with the media, her agent said the actor had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke. “Three-time national award-winning actress, Surekha Sikri has passed away following a cardiac arrest earlier this morning at the age of 75. She had been suffering from complications arising from a second brain stroke," the actor’s agent Vivek Sidhwani said. “She was surrounded by family and her caregivers. Sikri had suffered a brain stroke in September last year and was discharged after a few days.

Sikri had made her acting debut with the 1978 political drama film Kissa Kursi Ka and gone on to play supporting roles in numerous Hindi and Malayalam films, as well as in Indian soap operas. A recipient of three National Film Awards, Sikri, a film, theatre and TV veteran, was best known for her performances in “Tamas", “Mammo", “Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro", “Zubeidaa" and daily soap “Balika Vadhu". She received widespread praise for her role as a grandmother in Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer “Badhaai Ho" (2018).

She won the National Film Award for the Best Supporting Actress for the film. The actor was not doing well at that time and had turned up in a wheelchair to accept the award. Sikri was last seen in Netflix’s “Ghost Stories", directed by Zoya Akhtar.

Sikri is survived by her son Rahul Sikri.
