Kanpur, Jun 26, 2021: Chairperson of the women’s wing of the Kanpur chapter of Indian Industries Association (IIA), Vandana Mishra (50) died of post-Covid complications on Friday. Mishra breathed her last on the way to the hospital as the car ferrying her was caught in traffic during President Ram Nath Kovind’s three-day visit to the city.

According to her family, Vandana Mishra recovered from Covid-19 in April of this year. She had been experiencing post-Covid complications in recent days and even went to a hospital in Kanpur on Friday afternoon for medical tests.

On Friday evening, family members had to rush Mishra to a private hospital after she complained of nausea and vomiting.

However, the car ferrying Vandana Mishra got stuck in traffic between the Nand Lal intersection and the Govindpuri flyover in Kanpur owing to security arrangements ahead of President Kovind’s visit to the city.

Loss of crucial time led to Mishra’s demise while on the way to the hospital despite the best efforts of family members accompanying her, one of whom was a doctor.

President sends condolences

Upon his arrival in Kanpur, President Kovind summoned DM Alok Tiwari and Police Commissioner Aseem Arun to inquire about the incident. The Kanpur Police Commissioner later met family members of Vandana Mishra and communicated deep condolences from the President of India.
In a tweet on Saturday, the Kanpur Police Commissionerate said, "The President was pained by sister Vandana Mishra’s untimely demise."

Top officials of the district administration and local police were also seen at the cremation grounds during the last rites of Vandana Mishra on Saturday.

Apart from station-in charge Sushil Kumar, three other officers have been placed under suspension for stopping traffic longer than directed on the said route. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kanpur South) has been tasked with conducting a probe into the incident.

President Ram Nath Kovind is on a three-day visit to Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. He is scheduled to undertake a trip to his native village of Paraunkh on Sunday. Both Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel are also in Kanpur to welcome the President.
