Mangalore Today News Network

July 05, 2018: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has been granted interim bail in the case related to the 2014 death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar. Tharoor had moved for anticipatory bail at Delhi’s Patiala House Court after the Delhi Police made him an accused in his wife’s death.

Tharoor has been charged under sections 498A (husband or his relative subjecting a woman to cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), but has not been arrested in the case. However, he has been summoned as an accused in the case with the court observing that there are sufficient grounds to proceed against him.

Special Judge Arvind Kumar reserved the judgment on Tharoor’s anticipatory bail plea yesterday. The plea was opposed by the Delhi Police which said that the Congress leader might flee the country.

Tharoor has been granted bail on a surety of Rs 1 lakh and has been directed not to leave the country without the court’s permission.

Pushkar was found dead in a luxury hotel room in New Delhi on the night of January 17, 2014. The Delhi Police, in its chargesheet filed in the case on May 14, had accused Tharoor of abetting Pushkar’s suicide and told the court that he should be summoned as an accused in the case, claiming that there was sufficient evidence against him.

In the nearly 3,000-page chargesheet, the police had named Tharoor as the only accused, while also alleging that he had subjected his wife to cruelty.
