Schools and colleges shut in Chennai after cyclone alert: Top 10 developments

Chennai 09 Nov, 2015 : The East Coast is bracing for a cyclone as heavy rains lashed parts of northern Tamil Nadu over the weekend. The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to move over Chennai.

The Met Department advised fishermen not to venture into the sea until high waters recede.


Violent winds with a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour are expected to prevail over the northern parts of Tamil Nadu.


Depression over Bay Of Bengal has intensfied further making it deep depression.
8 task forces are monitoring on the ground in Puducherry to ensure safety of the people in the union territory.


There are chances that this deep depression would gain strength of cyclonic storm.


Under the influence of the cyclonic storm, rainfall is expected in most parts of Tamil Nadu with heavy to very heavy rainfall over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24-48 hours.


Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph would prevail along and off north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram districts of south Tamil Nadu coasts during next 12 hrs. The speed would gradually increase to 60-70 kmph gusting to 80 kmph along and off above coasts in afternoon.


Schools and colleges will be shut in Puducherry, Chennai and adjoining districts Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.


On Sunday, pockets of Chennai received up to 7 cm rain. The northeast monsoon, which has brought the wet spell, had set in over the southern region on October 29.


People living in low lying and coastal areas in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Puducherry have been advised to shift to safer places.
