SC asks Centre’s stand on Ram Sethu project

Mangalore Today News Network

ram setuNew Delhi, Nov 4:  A Supreme Court Bench comprising Chief Justice of India  KG Balakrishnan, Justice RV Ravindran and Justice JM Panchal, in a significant move, has said that it wanted to know the Centre’s opinion on having an alternate alignment for the Sethusamudram channel that would spare the Ram Sethu of mythological importance from any danger.

Hearing an appeal from former union minister Subrahmanya Swamy who has sought scrapping of the project, the Supreme Court asked Additional Solicitor General Harin Rawal to disclose the government stand within four weeks. The case has been adjourned  to December 11.

The court had in  July, 2008 reserved its order on a host of suits that were filed challenging the government for its decision to implement the  Sethusamudram project, on the grounds that the project would not only  damage  the mythological bridge, but also hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus.
