Rain causes misery in B’lore City

Bangalore, Sep 26, 2014:  September 25,Thursday night brought a deluge of  rain ( 130 mm at least) in Bangalore City causing serious mess.

 

According to TV news reports, a person was swept away, many trees uprooted,  scores of vehicles  submerged on streets as well as apartment basements. Streets were under three to four feet of water. Water gushed into many houses in low-lying areas, forcing people to take shelter atop roofs.

The torreents of rain threw traffic out of gear, with jams reported across the City till midnight. At many places, vehicles could not move an inch forward for hours together. From Anil Kumble Circle to Trinity Circle, vehicles were moving at snail’s pace. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded for hours from Rajajeshwarinagar gate to Kengeri due to the breakdown of heavy vehicles. Similar situation was witnessed at Majestic and else where like  Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Okalipuram.

Clogged storm water drains added to the problem. Unable to bear the water pressureand volumes, many manholes overflowed. Construction materials of the ongoing TenderSURE road project were washed away.

While the houses in low-lying areas were the most affected, temples were not spared either.People struggled to reach their destinations as there were no autorickshaws or cabs on the road after 7:30 pm. Buses were also off the. Three to five feet water filled up Rhenius Street, Shivananda Circle Junction, Jayanagar, Double Road, Majestic and Cunningham Road and so on. Rainwater mixed with sewage gushed into houses at Anepalya, Ejipura, Neelasandra, Austin Town and Frazer Town.

There were reports of trees falling from Bannerghatta Main Road, Marenahalli 18th Main Road and near Jayanagar Police Station. Water logging was reported at KP Agrahara, Magadi Road and on JC Road at Journalist Colony. Drains were blocked at Shantinagar.
