The CBI court had convicted Lalu Prasad and 15 others in the fodder case, or the chara-ghotala case, on December 23, 21 years after the case first surfaced.

On Wednesday, the CBI court deferred sentencing in the case after it was informed by the District Bar Council about death of two lawyers.

The court also served contempt notices to senior leaders of the RJD and the Congress for criticising Lalu’s conviction on television.

The case pertains to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury between 1991 and 1994. Lalu Prasad was the chief minister of Bihar from 1990 to 1997.

The CBI court acquitted former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra and five others in the case. Of the 34 accused, 11 died during the trial while one turned a CBI approver. The trial in the case was completed on December 13.

Besides Lalu Prasad, the convicted include three former IAS officers, Phoolchand Mandal, Beck Julius and Mahesh Prasad.
