Prohibitory Orders in 11 Delhi Districts Till Sept 8 Following Violence by Ram Rahim Sect

New Delhi, Aug 25: Prohibitory orders were issued in 11 districts of Delhi, including New Delhi, after violence broke out in the National Capital Region due to the conviction of self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

As per the statement issued by Delhi Police, Section 144 CrPC will continue to remain in effect till September 8. Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik urged the people to maintain peace and tranquility.

“Appeal to all to maintain peace & order. #DelhiPolice on full alert. Strict legal action will be taken against miscreants for any violation (sic),” he said on Twitter.

At least nine incidents of arson broke out in Delhi after Ram Rahim got convicted in the 15-year-old rape case. At least one bus was set on fire at the Delhi-Haryana border, whereas, two empty rakes of Rewa Express were torched at Ananth Vihar terminal by members of Dera Sacha Sauda.

Ram Rahim, was found to be guilty by the Special CBI Court in panchkula today, was flown using air chopper to Rohtak by the Haryana Police. He would be kept in detention in Rohtak till the court pronounces the quantum of punishment on Monday.

The quantum of punishment is expected to be a minimum of seven years in jail, and a maximum of life imprisonment.

In the violence which ensued post the Dera chief’s conviction, at least 28 people lost their lives, whereas, more than 250 were injured. Six columns of Army were deployed in Haryana to contain the unrest.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to the Punjab and Haryana chief ministers, assuring them of all possible assistance by Centre to tackle the situation arising out of Ram Rahim’s conviction.

Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar issued a public appeal to the Dera members, urging them to refrain from violating the law and order. “We will take all possible steps to control the situation. Violence will not help anyone’s cause. I appeal everyone to maintain peace,” he said, after chairing a high-level meet with Cabinet colleagues and senior officials.
