Outrage in Rajya Sabha as Jaitley defends Modi’s ’scam to skill’ remarks

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, April 28, 2015: There was outrage by the opposition Congress in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ’scam to skill’ remarks made in Toronto earlier this month. The House had to be adjourned twice over the remarks.

jaitley_"There is no gag order and the Prime Minister of India is perfectly entitled to say that what happened in the last 60 years, we will break away from that and present an honest government to the people of India," Jaitley said amid loud slogans from the opposition.

Rejecting Jaitley’s defence, the opposition MPs said PM Modi calling India a "country of scams" abroad was a "grave mistake" and demanded a discussion on the controversial remarks. The adjournment motion moved by Congress MP Anand Sharma was however rejected.

"Earlier India was known as ’scam India’, we want it should be known for ’skill India’" Modi had said during his speech at an event organised by the Indian diaspora at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.

Modi said he is "cleaning up" the mess left behind by others.  "Jinko gandagi karni thi, gandagi kar ke chale gaye, hum safai karke jayenge (Those who had create a mess, they have done so and left. We will go after cleaning it up)," Modi said attacking the previous governments, mostly led by the Congress.
