The MLAs in Bengaluru have come up with a proposal of a “Legislature Township” – 100 acres of land near Whitefield in Bengaluru to provide independent housing to the MLAs and the MLCs of Karnataka.

The swanky township  will not only provide independent houses to the members of the legislative assembly (MLAs) and members of legislative council (MLCs) but will also provide accommodation for officers attached to both the houses of the legislature.

The township will also have sprawling bungalows for the assembly speaker and the council chairman and will also have all modern amenities such as a club house, a community hall, a recreation centre and a playground.

“Modelled like the ’Nyaya Grama’ ( judicial layout) in Bengaluru, a legislative township should be created where residences for honourable speakers and legislative heads of both houses, secretaries for both the houses, guest houses for officers of both houses, officer’s club, entertainments buildings community house, children’s playground, park etc will be created,” states the letter to the Secretary of the Karnataka legislative assembly.

In a reply, S Murthy, the Secretary of the Karnataka legislative assembly has written that "Over 100 acres of land in and around Kadugodi plantation has been identified for the creation of a township and the ownership of the same has now been transferred."

The citizens of Bengaluru are in up in arms – not just because of the misuse of the taxpayer’s money, but also because the 100 acres of land - in and around Kadugodi plantation – that has been identified for the creation of the township is a forest area in Kadugodi. If the proposal is accepted, Bengaluru will lose 100 acres of its green cover.

Activists and citizens have questioned the move since Bengaluru is already grappling with a depleting green cover and rising pollution levels.
